Be still and know that I am God” is a well-known verse from
Psalm 46:10(specifically, it is the first part of the verse, often quoted with “I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth”).
It is a profound call to surrender, trust, and recognize God’s sovereignty, particularly in times of trouble, chaos, or overwhelming busyness.
What Does It Mean?
- “Be Still” (Cease Striving): In the original Hebrew, “be still” (raphah) can be translated as “let go,” “release,” “relax,” or “cease striving”. It is not just about physical inactivity, but a command to stop worrying and trying to control outcomes through our own strength.
- “Know that I am God”: This is a call to recognize, acknowledge, and experience God’s power and presence. It encourages moving from intellectual knowledge to a personal, heart-level trust that He is in control, even when the “earth gives way”.
- Context: Psalm 46 is a “song of confidence” (often attributed to the sons of Korah) written during a time of immense danger or natural disaster. It establishes God as a “refuge and strength” (v. 1).
