Subway Mensch – The Kindness of Strangers

Isaac Theil doesn’t know what to make of all the fuss, now that this photo has gone viral.  We are a society hungry for heroes. Sometimes we even manufacture them for their celebrity value.  Here, at last,  is a man who puts a human face on the ordinary, sometimes unnoticed,  kindess.   מזל טוב, mazel tov, Isaac!  May you survive the notoriety.

Face Transplant Update

Update Successful Face Transplant

From AP, Cleveland, Yahoo News Canada reports

1st U.S. face transplant patient says she forgives man who shot her

In December 2008, Connie Culp had 80 % of her face replaced with facial skin, and bond, muscles and nerves from a woman who had dies. The operation, by a team of doctors, was carried out at Cleveland Clinic where Culp appeared for a news conference this week.

Culp came forward this week for a news conference at the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors in December replaced 80 per cent of her face with bone, muscles, nerves, skin and blood vessels from a woman who had died.

“The woman who had the first face transplant in the United States says it was the smell of soap that made her realize her new face was working.”

Successful Face Transplant

The Wall Street Journal reports an amazing success – a face transplant. This is not just news.  This is a person who can use our prayers.  So let’s say one for a full, happy outcome.

Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic performed the first near-total face transplant on a 46-year old woman. The 22-hour procedure will enable her to eat solid food, smell and breathe through her nose again, doctors say.

Hold on to Your Joy

I don’t know about you but I have to fight to hold on to peace and joy.  A friend brought me a gift yesterday as a memento of her trip to celebrate St. Joseph’s Feast Day with her family. I prayed this morning than opened it for encouragement.  Here is the answer to my prayer:

Though an army may encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war may rise me, in this I will be confident.

One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.

For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His Tabernacle He shall hide me; He sall set me high upon a rock.

And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle; I will sing; yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.

Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice! Have mercy also upon me, and answer me.  When You said, “seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, Lord, I will seek.” Psalm 27:3-8

This is all the more meaningful to me because I did an oil painting of the face of Christ and it hangs near my desk.  I do gaze on Him throughout the day.  Sometimes, like today, I need a reminder.
