Burke’s “Exile” to Malta**: What if Everyone is Wrong? UPDATED

“And I started thinking about the refugees who make the dangerous trip from Africa to Italy, and for whom Pope Francis has great compassion and concern. Malta is part of the migrant route.

And then I started thinking about how Malta has said it feels overwhelmed by immigrants. Just yesterday, there were reports that as many as 500 people had perished off the coast of Malta.

And then I thought: Burke is only 66 years old — he has a lot of energy left in him, and is very organized — and by all accounts he is a stickler of an obedientiary.

It would not at all surprise me to discover that Pope Francis, seeking to find a way to give assistance to people risking their lives to escape a troubled continent, has deliberately put along their route a youngish churchman with a humanitarian “military order” under his patronage, and a gift for putting things together.

In fact, this seems like exactly the thing Francis would do: align an obedient, faithful Cardinal who enjoys a bit of ceremony from time to time with a well-organized Knighthood able to offer medical and emergency help, and who also rather like getting spiffed up from time to time, and put them to work, together, for the good of the countless numbers of people, and ultimately for the good of the church.

I suppose if one buys into the worldly take on what constitutes a prestigious office, one might say “yes, this is a demotion! From the Curia, the seats of Power, and making episcopal recommendations to the little island of Malta**, and the Knights?”

But the whole world is in the midst of great crisis, and the church — this great centering pole which keeps everything from collapsing and lets in the light — must respond, wherever she can, and do it quickly and authoritatively, because nations are failing, as they do, and people are suffering, and darkness is encroaching, all about.

I think Francis has given Cardinal Burke a great challenge, a great privilege, and a mighty task: to sustain and further build up an organization that serves people-in-need around the world, regardless of race, creed, nationality; to shore up good-and-welfare networks that have become stagnant; to assist immigrants and nations as the world continues its transition into something different from what it has been. And to — why not, if he wants? — wrap all of these efforts in occasional pageants of great beauty and solemn worship, because beauty feeds the heart and soul, and it doesn’t belong to only some, but to all.”

American Anchor for Russian Station Quits on Air in Dramatic Fashion

News reporters in this country once had enormous clout. That was back when they were objective and could be trusted to at least provide both sides of the issues. From the muckrakers to the tabloid that first exposed the John Edwards cheating scandal, some journalists have not been afraid to go against the grain. Sadly, that is not the case in this country any longer.

Since 2008, when Barack Obama managed to gain a choke hold on the mainstream media, the American public has been lied to time and time again by once trusted major news sources. Throughout the years of this regime we’ve seen overt bullying tactics from the Obama and his minions against news organizations that seek to report the truth. The Administration wants to control the stories and the angles that are reported to the People.  And when they cannot, they ridicule whole news organizations, they try to shame or embarrass individual reporters, or they ignore or banish individual reporters and news agencies in their entirety.

This morning I saw the report on an American newscaster who worked in the Washington, D.C., office of a Russian news agency. I have never heard of Liz Wahl or the station, Russia Today, but I have to give kudos to Miss Wahl. Here is the broadcast that probably has the Russian station and Vladimir Putin grinding their teeth.

 

This journalist stood up for her beliefs and put her own self-respect ahead of her career and well-being. Whether or not one agrees with her opinions about the actions of Putin in the Ukraine, it takes guts to disavow an employer with whom you have fundamental disagreements. Moreover, Wahl did not just bow out quietly and begin job hunting on the down low. Instead, she publicly expressed her disdain for the egregious breach of trust that the Russian-state-owned news agency has perpetrated on people all over the world. Was it unprofessional? Perhaps. But those few seconds of telling the truth in the heat of the moment spoke louder than anything she cold have ever written or spoken after the fact.

Bravo, Ms. Wahl. Maybe MSNBC or CNN could use your services. But wait, they also whitewash the truth and tow the Obama line. What does the Fox say?

I’m a day late but the timeliness of this coverage makes up for my shortcoming.

Logic leads me to conclude  that the Chicago Tribune, in refusing to run this picture, but accepting a revised photo showing not this dead fetus but a photo of a live 20 week old baby en utero,  that it finds publishing a picture of a dead baby unacceptable, but has not problem showing a living baby which it has no problem allowing to be killed after maiming, pain and torture, in the act of abortion. Our society wants what it wants and is willing to kill for it.

“Both the Los Angeles Times and USA Today refused to run the advertisement altogether, while the Chicago Tribune settled for a revised version, with a different picture of a live 20-week old baby en utero.

“It strikes me as ironic that a medically accurate fetal model was too controversial, when the actual babies being aborted are living humans with blood pulsing through their veins,” Marissa Cope, marketing and research director at Heroic Media, a pro-life apostolate, told CNA  July 12.

Major newspapers that ran the original advertisement included the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. Some papers ran the ad with the stipulation that the wording “made it clear that it was a paid advertisement,” Cope said.

Cope called the rejections “disappointing, but not surprising.”

The goal of the advertisement was to raise awareness of a baby’s development at 20 weeks gestation. Congress is currently considering a bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks, when an unborn child can likely feel pain.

There is evidence that fetuses can feel pain as early as 20 weeks, and they certainly can by 24 weeks.

On June 18, the House passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would prohibit abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

It states, “there is substantial medical evidence that an unborn child is capable of experiencing pain at least by 20 weeks after fertilization, if not earlier.”

Though the bill has passed the House, it must still pass the Senate, and the White House has suggested that if it arrives on President Obama’s desk he will veto it.”

Pope Francis opts for Vatican guesthouse instead of papal apartment

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Shunning the spacious papal apartment used by his predecessors, Pope Francis has chosen to continue living in the Vatican guesthouse where he has been staying since the beginning of the conclave.

Federico Lombardi, explained on Tuesday (March 26) that Francis will live “until further notice” in a suite in the Santa Martha Residence, a modern Vatican guesthouse for priests and bishops who work in the Roman Curia or who are visiting the Vatican for meetings and conferences. The Vatican’s chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, explained on Tuesday (March 26) that Francis will live “until further notice” in a suite in the Santa Martha Residence, a modern Vatican guesthouse for priests and bishops who work in the Roman Curia or who are visiting the Vatican for meetings and conferences.

Francis made his intentions clear on Tuesday morning, while celebrating Mass in the residence’s chapel for its permanent guests, who occupy about half of the residence’s 130 or so rooms.

The pontiff’s choice is a consequence of his desire to adopt a “simple” living arrangement that allows him “to live in community” with other priests and bishops, Lombardi explained.
